The '
RRS ''James Cook''' is a
research ship belonging to the
British Natural Environment Research Council. It was built to replace the ageing
RRS Charles Darwin and named after
Captain James Cook, the
British explorer,
navigator and
cartographer. It was funded by Britain's
Natural Environment Research Council and the Department of Trade and Industry's Large Scientific Facilities Fund.
It was launched on its maiden scientific voyage on the 5th of March 2007, to study a hole in the Earth's crust revealing the mantle below.
