'Puuwai', which means
heart in Hawaiian, is the main (and only) settlement on the
Hawaiian island of
Niihau. It is at the center of the small island, and the 160 (2000 census) native Hawaiians who live in this village speak the
Hawaiian language. The community lives as they did hundreds of years ago, and the modern amenities of life are extremely limited. Puuwai has a
one-room schoolhouse. Ni'ihau is located about 29 km (18 miles) west of Kaua'i.
