PUGET SOUND ROWING

'Univsity of Puget Sound Rowing' is a long-standing tradition at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. The official rowing program was started in the mid-1960's. The Logger Crew has called a bay at the Commencement Bay Rowing Club Boathouse on American Lake their home since the 1998-1999 season. They share bays with the Commencement Bay Rowing Club (CBRC) and the Pacific Lutheran University rowing program (PLU). Prior to this, a boathouse existed on the south end of the lake shared by UPS and PLU since their inception as a joint program in the mid-60's.

Logger Crew Traditions

Over many years, traditions have come and gone.
One tradition that these Loggers share alongside many of their fellow students is that of spirit and pride. The Logger crew is responsible for maintaining Shepp the Loggers whom is the school's official mascot costume as opposed to Grizz whom though loved by many has not yet become the official mascot costume. Shepp is a large lumberjack style man with a large paper mache head and prominent chin. Along with Shepp, many chants have been said to originate from the Logger Crew that have as such spread to the rest of the student body and are heard during other sporting events such as soccer and football games.
'Formal-Optional' practice or Freshman Welcoming is the passing of traditions from veteran rowers to newer rowers. As per its name and the university's even stricter policy on hazing, Formal-Optional has always remained an optional activity that rowers may or may not choose to engage in. Some rowers have gone the entire four years spent at UPS without attending.
'ROOH', a symbol of the Logger Crew's spirit and determination, is a tradition passed down to new rowers toward the beginning of the spring half of the season at Formal-Optional. In an archaic form of Arabic, ROOH has coincidentally meant "breath of life, soul, spirit, vital principal, inspiration, and jovial." The precise history behind ROOH is uncertain, but it remains as an inspiration to the Loggers what they can do as a team.

Meyer-Lamberth Regatta

The Meyer-Lamberth Regatta is an annual dual between the UPS and PLU crews the week before the NCRC Championships. On April 14, 2007, the UPS and PLU crews celebrated the 44th Annual regatta at the CBRC Boathouse on American Lake.
