PROVINCE OF MONZA AND BRIANZA

The 'Province of Monza e Brianza' (in the local idiom : "Pruincia de Munscia e Briansa") is a province of Lombardy, Italy. It was officially created (with part of the province of Milan) on May 12, 2004, but will only become effective in 2009. It will have an area of 363.8 km² and a population (2001 census) of 731,573.
The capital and most important commune is Monza (2001 pop. 120,204). Other important centres are (2001 population) Seregno (39,206), Desio (35,069), Limbiate (31,551), Lissone (34,450), Vimercate (25,536), Cesano Maderno (33,094), and Brugherio (31,470).
'Monza e Brianza' comprises only the southern part of the storic-geographic region of Brianza. Brianza extends from Canzo (North) to the Monza zone (South), and from the Seveso river (West) to the Adda river (East). In the middle of Brianza there is the Lambro river. The most important towns are Monza (S), Cantù (C-N-W), Erba (N), Merate (C-N-E), Lissone and Desio (S), Mariano Comense (C) and Canzo (N). See "Brianza".
