PROVIDER EDGE

The edge most IP/MPLS routers in an IP/MPLS network are referred to as 'Provider Edges' (PE). Since most of these networks are services provider built, the word Provider Edge is used. In IP/VPN services (Layer 3 VPN) VRFs for different customers are kept at the PE. The performance of the PE is high compared to P (Provider) router, as it has to do all the routing for all VRFs.
