As is the case with most democratic nations that follow the
Westminster system of the
parliamentary system, the Prime Minister is usually the leader of the majority party in the lower house of parliament, the
House of Representatives.
The Prime Minister is formally appointed into office by the
Governor General of Jamaica, who represents
Elizabeth II, the
Queen of Jamaica (Jamaica's
Head of State).
