C-14 dating is only useful back to 50,000 years or so, because of the short half life of C-14, 5,370 years. T-rex lived some 65 to 68 million years ago, so you use a material with a longer half life, uranium 238 is roughly 4.46 billion years and potassium 40 is about 1.25 billion years. Also, if the fossils doesn't have material in it, the dating is done on the rock found at the same time as the fossils that has the necessary elements. http://science.howstuffworks.com/dinosaur-bone-age.htm explains the half-life dating method well.
