PORT ANGELES, WASHINGTON

'Port Angeles' is a city in Clallam County, Washington, United States. According to the 2000 census, its population is 18,397, making it the largest city on the Olympic Peninsula. Port Angeles is the county seat of Clallam County. The area's harbor was dubbed ''Puerto de Nuestra Señora de los Angeles'' (Port of Our Lady of the Angels) by Spanish explorer Francisco de Eliza in 1791, but by the mid-1800s the name had been shortened and partially Anglicized to its current form.^[1]
Port Angeles is home to Peninsula College and is the birthplace of football hall of famer John Elway. It was a location in the novels ''Twilight'', ''New Moon'', and ''Eclipse'' by Stephenie Meyer. The city is served by William R. Fairchild International Airport.

The city of Mutsu, Aomori, Japan, is a sister city of Port Angeles. The cities have an exchange student program set up through the Port Angeles School District.

Geography

Port Angeles is located at (48.112969, -123.440713). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 163.3 km² (63.1 mi²), of which 26.1 km² (10.1 mi²) is land and 137.2 km² (53.0 mi²) (84.00%) is water.

Recreation and arts

Port Angeles is known for its abundance of outdoor activities, including rock climbing, hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, sailing, skiing, surfing, and SCUBA diving. The Olympic National Park is headquartered in Port Angeles, and the city is a popular gateway for travelers visiting the park. Hurricane Ridge is a 30-minute drive to the south.
Port Angeles is known for its eccentric artwork in the downtown area. There are many sculptures found on and along the sidewalks, such as metallic sea horses and sea gulls, some of which are mounted on wooden planks and some on the concrete sidewalk itself. These sculptures are changed from season to season, though some of the more popular sculptures have remained for many years.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 18,397 people, 8,053 households, and 4,831 families residing in the city. The population density is 704.0/km² (1,823.1/mi²). There are 8,682 housing units at an average density of 332.2/km² (860.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 91.35% White, 0.69% African American, 3.26% Native American, 1.29% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 2.85% from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race make up 2.34% of the population.
There are 8,053 households out of which 28.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.0% are married couples living together, 12.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.0% are non-families; 34.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.84.
In the city, the population's distribution is 23.7% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 18.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 92.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city is US$33,130, and the median income for a family is $41,450. Males have a median income of $33,351 versus $25,215 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,903. About 9.9% of families and 13.2% of the population are below the poverty line, including 17.3% of those under age 18 and 6.7% of those age 65 or over.
