History
The town of Polegate was, until the development of the railways, a small settlement in the Parish of Hailsham. In the 1840’s with the construction of the railway from Lewes to Hastings, with branches to Eastbourne and Hailsham, Polegate became a significant junction for the railway with a freight terminal for the market town of Hailsham and the local brick making industry. It was with this development that the town grew to accommodate the railway employees. Over the 20th Century the town continued to grow and although no longer a significant railway junction it was now the junction of the A27 and A22. Polegate currently has a population of 7929 people, a third (35%) of these are over 65.

Polegate now has its third railway station, the first being on the site of the third and present station. The second station was built further away from the High Street.
