The 'Philippine Christian University (PCU)', located along Taft Avenue,
Manila, was founded in 1947 via the initiatives of the Laymen of the Evangelical Association of the
Philippines. Originally named as 'Manila Union University', it was renamed as ''Philippine Christian College (PCC)''. In 1976, the PCC acquired university status.
PCU is the only major mainline Protestant(related with the United Church of Christ in the Philippines and the
United Methodist Church) university at the heart of Metro Manila. PCU is one of the few schools in the country which enjoy a Special Distinction and Autonomy Status awarded by our government's Commission on Higher Education. Such award is given to schools who have reached a level of academic performance and institutional achievements that merit respect and recognition.
PCU was originally run by an American Protestant Denomination. Because of the 1974 Act passed by the unicameral Philippine Legislature, American Churches were forced to divest. The Laurel-Langley Agreement, that allowed foreign ownership, expired on July 4, 1974. The American Churches received no compensation for the loss of the choice properties along Taft Avenue, Manila. This caused some enstrangement for a few years.
In the last 2 years, there were irregularties in the finances. For a while, Bishop Emiterus Erme R. Camba, formerly dean of Silliman University Divinity School, had to became acting President, until it was cleared up.
PCU celebrated their 60th anniversary last Sept. 30, 2006.
PCU joined the
National Collegiate Athletic Association in 1996. The varsity teams are the
PCU Dolphins.

Originally, the PCU administration chose a killer whale, but they instead chose a mammal close to their heart, the dolphin. The Juniors (high school) team are the Baby Dolphins. The other seniors varsity teams may also be referred to as the Dolphins. The women's team are the Lady Dolphins.
The PCU Dolphins in the last NCAA Season made history by winning the General Championship - Seniors Division and the coveted Basketball Championship Trophy. In addition, Gabriel Espinas took home the MVP and Rookie of the Year awards. The team remains intact except for some players who will be replaced by more talented recruits.
The PCU Dolphins men's basketball team has won one Championship in 2004 and played in the NCAA Championship Series for 3 straight years making rivalries with the teams that they battled with.
