'Pará' (pron. ) is one of the states of Brazil, located in the northern part of the country.
Neighboring states are (from north clockwise) Amapá, Maranhão, Tocantins, Mato Grosso, Amazonas and Roraima. To the north it also borders Guyana and Suriname (which has a district named Para).
The capital city of the state is Belém. Other cities include:

Geography


Pará is a territory of mostly tropical moist forest, covering a vast area of Amazon Rainforest.

History


Several rebellions during colonial times occurred in this state. (see History of Brazil).

Flag


The white stripe in the flag represents the zodiac, the Equator and the Amazon River. The blue star is Spica in the constellation Virgo, which is also depicted on the Flag of Brazil representing the state. The two red areas symbolize the vigor of the local people.
