'Oyster Bay' is a very affluent area of
Dar es Salaam,
Tanzania. It is known for its attractive
beaches. It was the
residential area during the
colonial time, and after
independence, the houses were mostly occupied by Europeans working for
development aid organisations. After independence, the residential quarters in what could be described as country's poshest, were being used by senior government officials including ministers, permanent secretaries and directors and commissioners.
More commonly referred to by the name "Oysterbay" as one word, the geographical area falling into its jurisdiction is bound between the Indian Ocean to the east, Mawenzi Road to the North,
Ali Hassan Mwinyi to the south and Ali bin Said Road to the West. Although a number of institutions are named Oysterbay, including a police station, a hospital and a school, the centre of Oysterbay is the Oysterbay Shopping Centre where there are a number of businesses and, increasingly, works of art. The now popular Tanzanian Tingatinga art has its home there.
