ORKDAL

'Orkdal' is a municipality in the county of Sør-Trøndelag, Norway.
Orkdal was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). Orkanger and Orkland were separated from Orkdal July 1, 1920 - but these were again merged with Orkdal January 1, 1963. Geitastrand was merged with Orkdal the same date.
A large part of the population is concentrated in Orkanger/Fannrem, which is situated at the head of the Orkdalsfjord, a branch of the large Trondheimsfjord. The Orkla, one of the better salmon rivers in Norway, meets the sea at Orkanger. Agriculture plays a significant role in the municipality.
