OPERATION DANNY
(Redirected from Operation Dani)
'Operation ''Danny''' (or Operation ''Dani'', ''Mivtza Dani'' in Hebrew) was carried out between the first and second truce of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. The objective was to relieve the Jewish population and forces in Jerusalem and to capture Arab territory around Tel Aviv from which attacks on the city were launched. The road between the two cities had come under control of Arab militia and Arab Legion forces after Operation Nachshon had opened it.
The first phase of Operation ''Danny'' was to capture Lydda and Ramle, located along the Jerusalem - Tel Aviv road. The second phase was to capture Latrun and Ramallah. The operation was carried out under Palmach command utilizing the Yiftach Brigade, the 8th Armored Brigade and two battalions from the Kiryati and Alexandroni brigades.
The first phase of the operation succeeded, putting the essential airport in Ramle in Jewish hands. About 70,000 Arabs were expelled from Lydda and Ramle after local Arab militia joined Transjordian tanks attacking Israeli positions in an attempt to retake Lydda.
The second phase of the operation failed.
