Alternative Energy: Wave-Powered Ocean Energy Technology
The ocean is a source of two significant sustainable forms of energy: thermal energy associated with the sun's heat absorbed by the ocean, and mechanical energy associated with the waves, currents and tides. Since the oceans cover more than 71% of the earth's surface, these forms of energy represent the largest solar collectors and retainers of the sun's vast energy that reach the earth's surface. This project is being developed by Florida Atlantic University's Center of Excellence in Ocean Energy Technology http://coet.fau.edu/ http://www.eflorida.com/innovationcenter
NASA - Topex / Poseidon Oceanography Mission Ends
The joint NASA/Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales Topex/Poseidon oceanography satellite ceased operations after nearly 62,000 orbits of Earth. The spacecraft lost its ability to maneuver, bringing to a close a successful 13-year mission. Topex/Poseidon data have helped in hurricane and El Nino/La Nina forecasting, ocean and climate research, ship routing, offshore industries, fisheries management, marine mammals' research, modernizing global tide models and ocean debris tracking. The satellite's pitch reaction wheel, which helps keep the spacecraft in its proper orbital orientation, stalled on October 9, and ground controllers concluded the wheel was not functioning. The satellite remains in orbit 1,336 kilometers (830 miles) above the Earth, posing no threat to the planet. Topex/Poseidon's data have been the subject of more than 2,100 research publications; major science and application achievements include: - the first decade-long global descriptions of seasonal and yearly ocean current changes - refined scientists' estimates of rising global sea level during the past decade - provided a new understanding of the role tides play in mixing the deep ocean - developed the most accurate ever global ocean tides' models - provided the first global data set to test ocean general circulation model performance - demonstrated global positioning system measurements in space could determine spacecraft positions with unprecedented accuracy, enabling rapid delivery of data. Jason, a follow-on oceanography mission launched in December 2001, is continuing Topex/Poseidon's study of ocean circulation affects on the Earth's climate. Jason precisely maps the surface height, wind speed and wave height of 95 percent of Earth's ice-free oceans every 10 days. The data provide invaluable input for short-term weather forecasting, long-term climate forecasting and prediction models. Topex/Poseidon's stellar performance allowed it to fly in tandem with Jason for nearly three years, doubling data collection. This allowed the study of smaller-scale ocean phenomena like coastal tides, ocean eddies and currents. It also improved understanding of how low-frequency ocean waves transmit signals of climate change. Beyond Jason, the Ocean Surface Topography Mission is in development for a scheduled launch in 2008. It will continue providing high-precision sea surface height data to the oceanographic science community. The joint effort had its genesis in 1979, when NASA began developing the Topex mission, while the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales was planning a similar one called Poseidon. The agencies formed a single mission in 1983, and it was launched August 10, 1992. JPL manages the U.S. portion of Topex/Poseidon/Jason for NASA's Science Mission Directorate. Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales manages the French portion of both missions.

The UFO Plague of Brazil a.k.a "The Brazilian Roswell"(Pt.1)
This very educational program details the intriguing events that occured in September of 1977 which caused a massive wave of confusion for the Brazilian populace. It occurred in the vicinity of the Brazilian island known as Colares which is located in the Amazon delta. It was a luminous object that hovered about 15 feet over the nearby ocean surface. After the incident for almost two months strange objects were seen in the skies, some were saucers and others were either cigar shaped or luminous, glowing crafts. Many people felt that a vampiric type of energy was being emitted from the objects and they began to get sick and some became deathly ill. Two residents of the islands reportedly dies from their chance encounters with the strange crafts. This is a definite must see for any individual who is interested in UFO's or things involving the paranormal. Furnace Creek Fault Earthquake Scenarios Affecting Las Vegas
The Collaboratory for Computational Geosciences http://www.seismo.unr.edu/ccog at the College of Science, University of Nevada, is modeling synthetic earthquake motions through complex geological structures. The simulations are teaching us what we need to know in order to accurately anticipate the ground shaking and other effects of likely earthquakes. This narrated video presents two scenarios for the same M7.5 earthquake affecting Las Vegas. In the first, the epicenter of the earthquake is at the southeast end of the fault near the resort of Furnace Creek, Calif., and the fault rupture propagates northwest, away from the city. In the second scenario, the epicenter of the earthquake is at the northwest end of the fault, at Ubehebe Crater, and the rupture is toward Las Vegas to the southeast. The one-minute video presents the the geologic and geotechnical data that went into the model, shows the wave propagation from both rupture scenarios, and compares the peak ground shaking from each scenario in Las Vegas. The direction of the fault rupture and the location of the earthquake's epicenter turn out to be the most important effects on the level of ground-shaking hazard in Las Vegas. To see additional earthquake scenarios affecting Nevada cities, please visit www.seismo.unr.edu/ma . The computations were set up and run by undergraduate Geological Sciences and Engineering students in the fall Geophysics and Geodynamics course at the Univ. of Nevada, Reno. Student Liz Lennox set up the Death Valley scenarios. John Louie, the course instructor, prepared the animations and narrated the video. The narrated video includes the sound of the synthetic seismic waves, sped up by a factor of ten and used to modulate pink noise, for clarity. The noise modulation makes the waves sound a little like ocean waves lapping at a beach. On the left channel is the sound of a station in Amargosa Valley, close to Death Valley. On the right channel is a station in Las Vegas Valley, at the Community College of Southern Nevada, Cheyenne Campus. Being closer to the earthquake, you will hear sounds on the left channel earlier than on the right. Additional sound effects were added for illustration. The wave-propagation animations each last 12 seconds, and they are sped up by a factor of ten over the 120 sec of wave propagation that is simulated. The the initially coherent earthquake energy soon converts to drawn-out horizontal vibrations of energy trapped in the soft sedimentary basins that are sprinkled through this region like the holes in Swiss cheese- each basin rings like a gong. This trapped energy has the highest amplitude and presents the greatest shaking hazard to Las Vegas. Though the trapped energy looks like noise, these synthetics have clean viscoelastic wave propagation with no noise or stochastic effects added. The animations showing the wave propagation illustrate the trapping and amplification well. As in the graphic on the right, each frame of the movies present a map of 3-component ground motions for the region on the map. The movie frames are 281 km wide from NW to SE and 251 km high from SW to NE. The three primary computer display colors of red, green, and blue (RGB) are used to represent the three directional components of ground vibration X, Y, and Z, respectively. Each color is given an intensity related to the intensity of shaking motion in the respective direction. Where there is no color, and you can just see the gray shaded-relief of the basin model, there is very little ground motion; red is motion in the X direction (East, horizontal on the screen); green is motion in Y (North, vertical on the screen); and blue is motion in Z (in and out of the screen). Where shaking directions combine, the colors combine according to the rules of colored light- yellow indicates combined horizontal motion (relative to the ground) of X and Y, adding red and green light, so could be north-south or east-west. White color, adding red, green, and blue all together, indicates high-intensity shaking on all components, including up and down. With these colors, P waves will be mostly blue, S waves red, green, or yellow; and the Rayleigh surface wave is identifiable by having blue up-down motion between the red, green, or yellow radial motions (elliptical particle motions). The wave propagation movies were created with the help of the software listed on the Creating Wave-Propagation Movies page http://www.seismo.unr.edu/ftp/pub/louie/convimage/.

Ocean
A poem on Valentine's Day by the poet Jason Old Ocean There's a voice that hides deep below the ocean's surface A voice that watches as the wind shapes and shifts the passing waves It waits for that perfect moment; When the ocean has calmed and the seashore becomes alone and quiet It's in that space that I find you, my autumn gem Alone and susceptible, pushing away the incoming tide A voice comes towards you like sand blowing along stranded dunes Patiently searching but never finding its destination Deep below the ocean's immense waters, that lonely voice resides and waits Once again, it waits Waiting, like a wilting flower desperate for rain, desolate Floating and drifting on the ocean currents Being shaped by the tides, my mind goes wandering My heart beat, like an anxious wave; surging in with the high tide Blood, like the color of love, runs through my veins; a clandestine tsunami And unknowing of its destination, it finally meets the coastline
Parabthi (parte 1 de 2)
PARABTHI in Sanscrit, the ocean of Being and Consciousness, from which everything springs, to which everything returns. "We all know a drop sinks into the ocean...but few know that the ocean sinks too into the drop". Kabir, hindu / sufi mystic poet. 'The ocean'. An extremely useful metaphor to help us picture the relationship between phenomenality (pure objectivity) and Noumenality (pure Subjectivity) is that of the waves on the surface of the ocean. The waves (phenomenon) cannot exist without the ocean (Noumenon). The ocean in its depths is quiet, peaceful and undisturbed. Waves, storms, and foaming surf arise on the surface without disturbing the depths. Likewise, Noumenality is totally undisturbed by the frenzied and meaningless activity of phenomenality. Each wave consists of a crest and a trough. One cannot appear without the other, just as all of the inseparable opposites of phenomenality must appear together. When the ocean identifies with a wave and the wave thinks of itself as being separate from the other waves and from the ocean itself, the illusory individual appears. This is spiritual ignorance. When identification ends and awakening occurs, it is clear that there is only the ocean (Awareness), there has always been only the ocean, and the ocean is You.
