'North Lanarkshire' (''Siorrachd Lannraig a Tuath'' in
Gaelic) is one of 32
council areas in
Scotland. It borders onto the north east of the
City of Glasgow and contains much of Glasgow's suburbs and commuter towns and villages. It also borders
Falkirk,
East Dunbartonshire,
West Lothian and
South Lanarkshire. The council covers parts of the former
counties of
Lanarkshire,
Dunbartonshire, and
Stirlingshire.
The area was formed in 1996, largely from the
Cumbernauld and Kilsyth,
Motherwell and
Monklands districts.
