NEWINGTON, BELFAST
'Newington' is an area of north Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Newington is a small cluster of streets consisting of large red-brick terraces. It is predominantly working-class and Catholic. It is located about 2km north of Belfast City Centre, just off the main Antrim Road and near the Waterworks. It abuts the loyalist Tiger's Bay area, and the peace line between the two areas is occasionally the scene of intercommunal violence.
It consists of 8 main streets, Newington Street, Newington Avenue, Ponsonby Avenue, Atlantic Avenue, Baltic Avenue, Pacific Avenue, Lothair Avenue and Oceanic Avenue.
Newington is located in the BT15 postal code area.
Famous for its camaradare and community spirit, the locals of Ponsonby Avenue love to parade in fancy dress, be it as a famous character from film or television, a literary hero, or as a Chinese person.
Perhaps the most well-known person to come out of the area is the esteemed writer Ruben Morris. Now living in Edinburgh, Ruben acts as an ambassador for Ponsonby Avenue, and indeed Belfast. Inspiration for her work is derived from sources as varied as tragic mythological prose, to a giant mouse who steals chocolate. She has battled Tourette's Syndrome throughout her life - with her random noises often getting others into trouble, on one occassion sparking a race crime - however, she is adored by her grateful fans.
