The potential consequences of ignoring these rules-loss of membership on the reserve, for yourself and your child-are clear, and for those who incur them, devastating. Break the rules, and you also risk being perceived as having betrayed the Mohawk Nation by diluting the "purity" of the bloodline. In Club Native, filmmaker Tracey Deer uses Kahnawake, her hometown, as a lens to probe deeply into the history and contemporary reality of Aboriginal identity. Following the stories of four women, she reveals the exclusionary attitudes that divide the community and many others like it across Canada. Deer traces the roots of the problem, from the advent of the highly discriminatory Indian Act through the controversy of Bill C31, up to the present day, where membership on the reserve is determined by a council of Mohawk elders, whose rulings often appear inconsistent. And with her own home as a poignant case study, she raises a difficult question faced by people of many ethnicities across the world: What roles do bloodline and culture play in determining identity? U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy in Missoula granted a preliminary injunction late Friday restoring the protections for the wolves in Montana, Wyoming and Idaho. In his ruling, Molloy said the federal government had not met its standard for wolf recovery, including interbreeding of wolves between the three states to ensure healthy genetics. "Genetic exchange has not taken place," Molloy wrote in the 40-page decision. Molloy said hunting and state laws allowing the killing of wolves for livestock attacks would likely "eliminate any chance for genetic exchange to occur." Molloy will eventually decide whether the injunction should be permanent. PROTECTING THE WOLVES: February 22, 2008 DENVER — The Bush administration on Thursday announced an end to federal protection for gray wolves in Montana, Wyoming and Idaho, concluding that the wolves were reproductively robust enough to survive. A coalition of wildlife and environmental groups dismissed the government's claims and announced plans for a lawsuit to reverse the decision, which is to take effect next month. Advocates for the animals said there were too few wolves to make a genetically sound population, and that state plans to manage wolf populations were underfinanced and fueled by a long-simmering animosity against wolves that could drive them back to threatened status. "The numbers are inadequate and the state programs are, too," said a senior wildlife advocate at the Natural Resources Defense Council, a conservation group that is participating in the planned lawsuit. From a base population of 66 wolves introduced into Yellowstone National Park and central Idaho in the mid-1990s, there are now nearly 1,300, with an additional 230 or so in Montana that have drifted down from Canada. State management plans allow for wolf hunting, or outright eradication in some places — including most of Wyoming — with a target population of 150 in each of the three states. Biologists cited by the environmental and wildlife groups say that target population is too small, and suggest instead that 2,000 to 3,000 animals are the minimum needed. Gray wolves were first protected in 1974, one of the first animals to be covered by the Endangered Species Act, which was passed a year earlier. But it turned out there were none left to protect across most of the West. That led to the idea of reintroduction, which began in 1995. "We're not at recovery yet," said Doug Honnold, the managing attorney at the Northern Rockies office of Earthjustice, a nonprofit legal group based in Oakland, CA. "We're in the neighborhood, we're close, but we're not there." Removing federal protections now, Mr. Honnold said, would violate the language of the Endangered Species Act that requires decision makers to use the best possible science in determining a viable target population.  | Huu-ay-aht pay tribute to Wawmeesh at a Memorial potlatch Tyee hawilth Huu-ah-aht, Tliishin Song Song belonging to the Tyee Hawilth (head chief) of the Huu-ay-aht Nation of Anacla in Bamfield, British Columbia, Canada. This was performed at the memorial potlatch held in honor of the late Wawmeesh -- George Watts of the Tseshaht First Nation. The family of the late Wawmeesh held a grand three day potlatch in November 2006attended by thousands in honor of an amazing person. George touched the lives of many. Huu-ay-aht were one of many tribes who took part in the potlatch bringing out their Huu puukwa num tuupaat (treasures of the chief). This particular song is the Hin-Keets (sea serpant) dance. As you can see there are two sea serpant headdresses, one is usually a male, one a female. One of the choruses is Tluu-yaw-chee-shilth naas which roughly means "the day is getting better" Note -- The potlatch was once outlawed by the Canadian government for a number of years (1884 -- 1951). If anyone were to partake in a potlatch they would be jailed and/or fined and regalia confiscated. This video is some proof that nuu-chah-nulth culture is very much alive and getting stronger.  | Nurturing, Economics and Indian Affairs - Harold Gatensby Harold Gatensby speaks about nurturing and the economics of institutions and bureaucracies. Harold Gatensby (Dahka T'lingit) was an honored 2006 Buffett Award finalist for his advocacy efforts to protect the Yukon River Watershed and his work within the justice system for better treatment of Native people. Harold Gatensby is one of the co-founders of the Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council (YRITWC) and currently serves on its Executive Committee. He has also worked as a community-based justice training facilitator. Gatensby resides in Carcross, Yukon Territory, Canada. As a co-founder of the YRITWC, Harold advocates for the clean-up of the Yukon River and its tributaries, one of the largest watersheds in North America. The coalition of indigenous governments of the YRITWC are indigenous citizens dependent on the environmental integrity of the Yukon River for survival; they unite on issues related to the environmental and cultural integrity of the entire watershed. Harold traveled to South Africa to represent the YRITWC at the 2002 United Nations Earth Summit. Harold has been a keynote speaker at numerous events including the Alaska Federation of Natives annual meeting. He served as the Yukon Territory representative on the Advisory Board to the Aboriginal Justice Learning Network in Ottawa, a Canadian federal government-appointed board. He was instrumental in the creation of the Southern Lake Justice Committee in the early 1990s and served on the Committee in various capacities. In 1995, Harold founded Nares Mountain Wilderness Camp, which he still owns and runs today. At the retreat center, Gatensby facilitates restorative justice and environmental trainings for individuals, community groups, and professionals from around North America. Harold's application of community-based justice (also known as circle sentencing) and indigenous T'ingit cultural traditions helps address the poverty, pain, violence and cycle of loss in his community as a result of residential schools and related institutions that were imposed by the Canadian government on his people. Harold's personal history informs his community justice work. Memories of boarding schools for many First Nation generations recall pain and mental suffering. Youth incarceration is one symptom of this history. Spending many years of his youth in the prison systems, Harold made a conscious decision to turn his life around and help other people. He is now a respected House Leader of the Kookhittaan clan of the Dakha T'lingit Nation and on the front lines of community and environmental stewardship. Still, Harold regularly returns to correctional facilities to help inmates. He works tirelessly within the justice system for better treatment and cultural respect for Native people, cultural mediation and peace keeping. In 2000, Harold received a Probation 2000 (three-day international conference) Individual Merit Award for his community justice work, presented by Her Royal Highness Princess Anne of the United Kingdom. This Award brings recognition to individuals who have developed innovative approaches to reducing crime in their communities. In 2004, Harold and his wife, Colleen received the Cultural Volunteers of the Year Award from Carcross Community School. He is the proud parent of thirteen children. |

Myths and Urban Legends: Dobbs and Beck have perpetuated two related myths, that there are plans to construct a "NAFTA Superhighway" running from Mexico to Canada and that there are plans to join Mexico, Canada, and the United States in a "North American Union." Dobbs has discussed the fictional North American Union on 52 separate programs during the past two years. All three programs, Lou Dobbs Tonight, Glenn Beck, and The O'Reilly Factor, have presented as fact the "reconquista" myth, which states that there is a movement afoot for Mexico to take over the American Southwest. Unsubstantiated Allegations: On Lou Dobbs Tonight, viewers were told about a mythical explosion of leprosy cases due to illegal immigration and a mythical epidemic of voter fraud due to illegal immigration. Dobbs Out Front: Of the three hosts examined in detail, Dobbs is the most obsessed with the topic; indeed, fully 70 percent of the 2007 episodes of Lou Dobbs Tonight contained a discussion of illegal immigration. BACKGROUND: The report discusses, in detail, two types of myths regarding immigration perpetuated on cable news. The first are the largest and most common myths, such as those about crime and undocumented immigrants, and the costs of illegal immigration in terms of social services and taxes. The second are the urban legends, such as the purported conspiracy to take back the Southwest United States for Mexico and the supposed secret plan to construct a "NAFTA Superhighway" running from Canada to Mexico. Media Matters Action Network's analysis focuses on CNN's Lou Dobbs, CNN Headline News' Glenn Beck, and Fox News' Bill O'Reilly, all of whom have played major roles in fostering anti-immigrant hysteria. While discussions of illegal immigration regularly occur on other cable programs (particularly on Fox News, where it is a frequent topic on Hannity & Colmes and Special Report with Brit Hume), Dobbs, Beck, and O'Reilly are the principal purveyors of immigration misinformation and myths. |
