Geography

Nanchong is located in the north-east of Sichuan province. The city has a wide range of transport links, via the Chengnan and Nanguang highways, and national ways 318 and 213 pass through it. To the east of Nanchong is Daxian, to the west are Mianyang and Suining and to the north is Guangyuan.
The vast majority of the city consists of hills. The woodland coverage is 25%, but the woods are totally man made and quite young. Erosion in the area is serious, and because of this, the waters of the Jialin river contain more sand and mud than other larger rivers in the province.
The Jialin river, a Yangtze tributary, crosses Nanchong from north to south, and there are another 30 rivers with a drainage basin of more than 30 sq kilometers, but water pollution is serious. Sichuan water authority figures show that the water of some catchments of Jialin river cannot be used for drinking and irrigation.
Every day there is a flight from Nanchong Gaoping Airport to Guangzhou. More flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Chengdu will be opened in future.

History

Nanchong was a part of the Ba nation before its conquest by the Qin dynasty in 314 BC. The Qin set up the government at Langzhong city. Anhan city was established in Sunqin district at the beginning of the Han Dynasty.
The name of Anhan city was changed to Guozhou (fruit city) in 621 AD (Tang dynasty), and the name changed to Nanchong in 742 AD.
