NANA REGIONAL CORPORATION

'NANA Regional Corporation, Inc.' is one of thirteen Alaska Native Regional Corporations created under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 (ANCSA) in settlement of aboriginal land claims. NANA was incorporated in Alaska on June 7, 1972.[1] NANA is a for-profit corporation with a land base in the Kotzebue area in northwest Alaska. Its corporate offices are in Anchorage. NANA's Alaska Native shareholders are of Inupiat descent.
The Northwest Arctic Native Association, from which NANA Regional Corporation derives its name, was NANA's predecessor, and played a key role in the effort to resolve Alaska Native land claims that led to passage of ANCSA.

Shareholders


NANA's approximately 14,000 shareholders are Alaska Natives of Inupiat descent. As an ANCSA corporation, NANA has no publicly traded stock and its shares cannot legally be sold, though they can be inherited or gifted.
NANA offers an internship program to its shareholders to provide them with the opporunity to gain on-the-job training, experience, skills. This training offers students career insights, exposure to the workplace and networking opportunities. NANA's mentoring program pairs shareholder employees with mentors who are managers in professional fields.

NANA Region


The NANA region in northwest Alaska encompasses , about the size of Indiana. Most of it is north of the Arctic Circle, and its area coincides with the area of the Northwest Arctic Borough. The region has a population of about 7,200 people living in 11 communities including the regional hub of Kotzebue, and the villages of Ambler, Buckland, Deering, Kiana, Kivalina, Kobuk, Noatak, Noorvik, Selawik, and Shungnak.

Lands


Ten of the eleven ANCSA-created village corporations in the NANA region elected to merge with NANA, such that NANA has both surface and subsurface entitlement to those lands. NANA's total surface entitlement under ANCSA is . Kikiktagruk Inupiat Corporation (KIC), the village corporation for Kotzebue. KIC retains the surface area of land it is entitled to, a total of , but NANA will gain title to subsurface rights to KIC-owned lands, as provided under ANCSA. NANA-owned lands are managed by the NANA Land Department.

Under federal law, NANA and its majority-owned subsidiaries, joint ventures and partnerships are deemed to be "minority and economically disadvantaged business enterprise[s]" (43 USC 1626(e)).

★ 'NANA Development Corporation' (NDC). NANA's business arm. Oversees NANA business activity and cultivates developmental opportunities for NANA shareholders.

★ 'ASCG Incorporated'. Headquartered in Anchorage. Civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering; and architectural, planning, environmental, and survey consulting services.

★ 'DOWL'. Headquartered in Anchorage. Civil engineering services, including the design of roadways, highways, and trail systems; water, sewer, and storm drain systems; and facility site planning and design.

★ 'NANA/Colt Engineering'. Headquartered in Anchorage. Engineering and design, project management, construction management and facilities engineering.

★ 'WorkSafe, Inc.' Headquartered in Anchorage. Provides drug and alcohol program management services to Department of Transportation-regulated and non-regulated industries.

★ 'NANA Management Services'. Headquartered in Anchorage. Food service, professional catering, housekeeping, janitorial, security, lodging and hotel management, and employee leasing services.

NANA is one of the largest hotel operators in Alaska. Its properties are managed through the NMS Lodging, the hotel division of NANA Management Services.

★ 'Akmaaq'. Headquartered in Anchorage. Has five subsidiaries providing base operations, facilities management, energy, engineering, environmental, construction management and interior design services to federal, state, and municipal clients worldwide.

★ 'Ki Professional Services Group'. Headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Management holding company providing enterprise support to two wholly owned subsidiary companies, Ki and Five Rivers Services.

★ 'Qivliq'. Headquartered in Fairfax, Virginia. Providing shared services to the TKC family of 11 subsidiary companies in telecommunications, information technology, product development, major program management, construction management, facility operations, and operations support.
