A 'mustang' is a feral horse living on the western or southwestern plains of the US.
The word ''mustang'' comes from the
Spanish ''mesteño'', and ultimately from the
Latin ''animalia mixta'', meaning "animals without a known owner" (see article on the Spanish
Mesta).
