![]() | Muddy Mountain Trail 2008 Nevada's Valley of Fire off-road trail south rim route through Muddy Mountains connecting to Lake Mead's Echo wash & Echo Bay. Started the trip early saturday morning. Met unusual amount of traffic thru the offroad trail. A Capt in a 4x4explorer.. followed right after a Military Hummvee loaded to the teeth with our best and finest in full battle gear (sorry I did not take pics coz they were camped out at the front entrance of the trail doing some military live-fire excersise). We asked if we could trade trucks, He politely said "He'd love to but No thanks coz he might loose his job." ...lol. We saw a couple of trail bikes, Atvs and 2 old ladies that did not need rescue. They were enjoying the day and the trail just as much as we were. We picked up some garbage from which year we did not know nor cared. On the rock walls we found some petroglyphs possibly Anasazi maybe 900 to 1000 years old and also did a little bit of rock climbing. It was an awesome day. |

![]() | Off-road evasive maneuvers training: Bitter Springs Trail The ARC Initiative travels worldwide to bridge the gap between goods, services and information and those in dire need of resources. This often means that operatives encounter harsh, challenging environments and even the risk of death in order to complete a mission. Rigorous training in the off-season is the only way to overcome the challenges that lay ahead. CRL takes the wheel of a H1 Hummer that has seen better days in an effort to extricate himself and his compatriots from the grasp of death and desolation. Bitter Springs trail, a BLM Back-country Byway, has all this and more. It is a twenty eight-mile, two-hour journey through the Muddy Mountains of Nevada, an easy day trip when you want a break from the casinos and night life of Las Vegas. It is marked on most maps. It is located about forty miles east of Las Vegas, south of Interstate Highway 15, and west of Valley of Fire State Park. |
![]() | Lake Mead History The lake was named after Elwood Mead, who was commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation from 1924 to 1936 during the planning and construction of the Boulder Canyon Project that created the dam and lake. Lake Mead was established as the Boulder Dam Recreation Area in 1936, administrated by the National Park Service. It was then changed to the Lake Mead National Recreation Area in 1964, this time including Lake Mohave and the Shivwits Plateau under its jurisdiction. Both lakes and the surrounding area offer year-round recreation options. The accumulated water from Hoover Dam forced the evacuation of several communities, most notably St. Thomas, Nevada, whose last resident left the town in 1938. The ruins of St. Thomas are sometimes visible when the water level in Lake Mead drops below normal. Lake Mead as seen from the Hoover Dam clearly showing the "bathtub ring"The 1983 high-water mark or "bathtub ring" was not visible in photos that show the shoreline of Lake Mead. The bathtub ring is white because of the deposition of minerals on previously submerged surfaces. [edit] Drought In February 2008, the lake is currently at 50.44 percent of its capacity, threatening to make the Las Vegas valley's primary raw water intake inoperable. Though the small rise since last year has eased the current crisis, if the lake doesn't receive enough inflow this spring, problems may arise later this summer.[1] Arrangements are underway to pipe water from elsewhere in Nevada by 2011, but since the primary raw water intake at Lake Mead could become inoperable as soon as 2010 based on current drought and user projections, Las Vegas could suffer crippling water shortages in the interim.[1] Lake Mead draws a majority of its water from snow melt in the Western Colorado Rockies. Since 2000 the water level has been dropping at a fairly steady rate due to less than average snowfall. As a result, marinas and boat launch ramps have either needed to be moved to another part of the lake or have closed down completely.[2] Further research in February of 2008 by the University of California in San Diego led researchers to conclude that, if future climate changes as projected and water use "is not curtailed," Lake Mead could dry up by 2021.[3] [edit] Geography Access from the northwest from Interstate 15 is through Valley of Fire State Park and the Moapa River Indian Reservation. The lake is divided into several bodies. The large body closest to the Hoover Dam is Boulder Basin. The narrow channel, which was once known as Boulder Canyon and the original planned site for the dam is now known as The Narrows, connects Boulder Basin to Virgin Basin to the east. The Virgin River and Muddy River empty into Overton Arm, which is connected to the northern part of the Virgin Basin. The next basin to the east is Temple Basin, and following that is Gregg Basin. Jagged mountain ranges surround the lake, offering somewhat of a startling but beautiful backdrop, especially at sunset. There are two mountain ranges within view of the Boulder Basin, the River Mountains, oriented North-west to South-east and the Muddy Mountains, oriented West to North-east. Most expect to see lush vegetation to be growing on the shores of the lake but since Lake Mead is a reservoir the water level does not usually stay constant long enough to sustain trees or bushes. Aside from that the flora that is native to here is adapted to having less water and would most likely die off with the abundance of water Hoover Dam |

![]() | Nature Wonders VALLEY OF FIRE U.S.A. NWG-DVD-144 - Surrounded by the grey limestone of the Muddy Mountains the rocks in the Valley Of Fire, the oldest state park in NEVADA, glow a bright red. The rocks do indeed appear to burn in a magical fire that seems to transform them into stone and the origin of this glowing sandstone dates back almost a hundred and fifty million years to the Jurassic Period when the visible rock strata of today was formed by sand dunes. Following the Fremont People and those of the Basketmaker Culture this rocky domain was regularly visited by members of the legendary Anasazi Tribe who originated from the nearby Moapa Valley. For the Anasazi the shining rock formations symbolised a sacred land in which they held various religious ceremonies until they began to leave the area in around the 12th century. |
