 | Old St. David's Church -Part 2, Godfrey Reunion, October, 06 October, 2006 - Descendants of Samuel Gillespie Godfrey and Harriet Elizabeth Powe gather at their ancestors' place of worship and community. Founded in 1770, the Old St. David's Church in Cheraw, SC was the last Anglican or "state" church built in South Carolina under King George III. This church was used by the Americans and British during the Revolution and later by both the Confederate and Union armies. In the cemetary, we visit the country's first Confederate Memorial, erected in 1867. My Aunt Ad describes how the school children would march with Civil War veterans to lay flowers in honor of the fallen. There are soldiers from every American war buried in the cemetary, as well as Moses Rogers, the intrepid steamboat captain to whom Lucien refers.
