The 'Mobile Gendarmerie', It is called “juene(the yellow)” because of the gilded color of its galons, is a subdivision of the French Gendarmerie. It was created in 1921, at least in its current structure, because the creation of the first units of Anti-riot police goes up at the beginning of the 19th century. Its principal missions are the maintenance of law and order (MO), the re-establishment of the order, monitoring of the national territory and the dependencies, guarding of significant points (embassies, stations,…), the defense of the territory, reinforcement of the departmental Gendarmerie and, in the last few years, conducting external operations (Opex).

Organization

The territorial organization of the GM is as follows:

★ 7 Gendarmerie Areas in Metropolitan France.

★ 25 Legions of Mobile Gendarmes including 1 armoured grouping of Anti-riot police in Versailles Satory

★ 123 squadrons, each one led by a captain.

★ 1 grouping of safety and intervention of the national gendarmerie (GSIGN) which gathers the GIGN, the EPIGN and the GSPR, an integral part of the Anti-riot police.

★ 7 special safety groups.

★ 17.350 personnel.

GM Squadrons

A mobile squadron of gendarmes (EGM) is composed of:

★ 121 personnel.

★ 4 line platoons including 1 Intervention Group and 3 regular platoons.

★ The of Intervention Group is an organic unit, independent of the 3 other groups of a squadron. It takes part in the maintenance of law and order and also reinforces the departmental Gendarmerie. With of 18 soldiers, its particular missions (arrest, escort…) require specialized training. Gendarmerie with set up it group of intervention of second generation (PI2G), a unit which constitutes an intermediate force before the PSIG and the GIGN.

★ Some GM squadrons are set up the newer ''Second Generation Intervention Group'' (PI2G), a structure constituting an intermediate force between the Intervention Group and the GIGN. It must be operational and able to intervene within very short times. The PI2G can either only intervene on serious events, or to assist the GIGN. The first PI2G was created in Toulouse, wwith other units of this type to be raised soon.

★ 1 Platoon "Hors rang" (logistic and administration).
There are 2 types of GM squadrons: motorized squadrons carried in trucks or buses, and armoured squadrons in VBRG (Véhicule Blindé de Reconnaissance de la Gendarmerie). The VBC-90 (armoured cars with 90mm guns) were reformed.
Each squadron is differentiated according to a number, ex: 15/6 in Nimes.

★ 1st figure = number of the mobile squad of Gendarmes of membership.

★ 2nd figure = number of the squadron in the grouping.

★ 3rd quantify = number of the legion it belongs to (today the GM Area). It is not planned to renumber these EGM in the immediate future.

Reserves

The reservists of the GM police are gathered in reserve squadrons of anti-riot police (ERGM) whose denomination and organization are based on those of the squadrons of active, for example: ERGM 124/1 at Houses-Alfort.

★ 1st figure = 1 for the squadrons of reserve

★ 2nd figure = number of the mobile squad of Gendarmes of membership

★ 3rd figure = number of the squadron in the grouping

★ 4th figure = number of the legion of membership.
The reservists of the GM are not authorized to be used for the maintenance of law and order, but are rather employed on missions of service of order (presence at the time of large events for example), or in reinforcement of units of the departmental Gendarmerie.
Whereas it is import to be useful in the maintenance of law and order, in the past only limited use of the reservists of the Anti-riot police to provide reinforcements to the units of the departmental Gendarmerie or the staffs. The squadrons of reservists under contract are more and more brought to be useful in unit made up, i.e. complete squadron.
Although there are some women officers in the GM, is not open for to women warrant officers. In France,it is one of the few trades, with that of submariner, still prohibited to women.
