Political Rant #39: UK Ministry of Defence Gags Free Speech
MoD gags Coroners. Official!! Defence Minister orders Coroners to be quiet when dealing with deaths of service personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan , in case it leads to claims against the Government. A totally self defeating episode which points to a dictatorship and an attack on the freedom of speech , expression and the rule of law. Of course the gagging orders are nothing to do with out of court settlements from family members who deserve compensation for 'failures' by the Ministry of Defence ( under funded as it is by the UK Government). It is totally to do with a Soviet style attack on basic human freedoms - if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear. Obviously this Government have a LOT to hide. Let us continue to expose these dictators. ----------------------- MINISTERS yesterday launched an amazing bid to GAG coroners from criticising the Ministry of Defence. Defence Secretary Des Browne's lawyers said a coroner had breached rules by blasting the ministry's "serious failure". Oxford deputy coroner Andrew Walker was holding an inquest into Pte Jason Smith's death from heatstroke in Iraq. Lawyers asked the High Court to ban critical language. But Carol Wright, whose son Daniel died in a parachute accident training for the SAS, said: "If they don't want to be criticised, they should get their house in order."
Sri Lankans in US donate Rs. 12 million to Api Wenuwen Api
Sri Lankans in US donate Rs. 12 million to Api Wenuwen Api fund A group of Sri Lankan expatriates in the United States of America has donated 12 million rupees to "Api Wenuwn Api" (We for ourselves) fund, which is maintained by the Defence Ministry. The fund facilitates Api Wenuwen Api housing project aimed at building 50000 houses for the members of the armed forces. President Mahinda Rajapaksa received the donation from the representatives of the Ranaviru foundation in America at the Temple Trees today (May 21). The money was collected through series of cultural and musical shows organised by the Foundation which is dedicated to improve welfare facilities to the war heroes. The first phase of housing project is presently underway at Ipalogama in the Anuradhapura district. Construction works of 1620 houses have already been completed. A house built under this projects costs 2.4 million rupees out of which 1 million is provided by the government while the rests is expected to be found through donations. The houses will be given to the security forces, personnel at a cost of 800,000 rupees each. THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE in cooperation with the Central Bank of Sri Lanka is building 50,000 housing units for armed forces personnel. The project is phased over five years, with 10,000 houses to be completed each year. Already 1620 housing units are being built in Ipolagama, and are expected to be completed within six months. Stage two is expected to begin in Horowpathana. Each housing project also includes schools, shopping complexes, gymnasiums, and other facilities. These, along with new roads and other services will ensure that the surrounding region will also benefit from significant infrastructure development.
Brazilian Air Force
http://www.aviationlive.org Online Aviation Pics,Videos and Forum The Brazilian Air Force (Portuguese: Força Aérea Brasileira, FAB) is the aerial warfare branch of the Brazilian armed forces and one of the three national uniformed services. The FAB was formed when the Army and Navy air branch were merged into a single military force initially called "National Air Forces". Both air branches transferred their equipments, installations and personnel to the new armed force. The FAB is the largest air force in Latin America, with about 700 manned aircraft in service, and as of July 8, 2005, had 66,020 personnel on active duty. An additional 7,500 civilian personnel are employed by the Air Force The first public manifest to create an integrated military air service came up in 1928 when an army Major called Lysias Rodrigues wrote an article called "An urgent need: The Ministry of the Air" ("Uma premente necessidade: o Ministério do Ar"). Two years later the French Military Mission, working for the Brazilian Army, set the very first steps to organize a national air arm. The idea got more supporters when a group of Brazilian airmen came from Italy in 1934 and explained the advantages of having a military aviation unified. Also, the Spanish Revolution and the first movements of World War II at the end of the thirties showed the importance of Air power for military strategies. One of the main supporters of the plan to create an independent air arm was the then-president Getúlio Vargas. He organized a study group early in 1940 and the whole structure of the Ministry of Aeronautics (Ministério da Aeronáutica) was established the end of that year. This new governmental agency was responsible for the all aspects of the civil and military aviation including infrastructure, regulation and organization. Formally, the Ministry of Aeronautics was founded on January 20, 1941 and so it's military branch called "National Air Forces", changed to "Brazilian Air Force" (Força Aérea Brasileira - FAB) on May, 22. The Army ("Aviação Militar") and Navy ("Aviação Naval") air branches were extinguished and all personnel, aircraft, installations and other related equipments were transferred to FAB. Equipped with American airplanes, mainly the P-47 Thunderbolt, the FAB saw action on the Italian front, earning respect for its high number of sorties flown and the hard work of both pilots and support personnel. Their work was recognized by a Presidential Unit Citation issued on April 26th, 1986--one of only four non-US squadrons to receive such a citation. After the war, the FAB began flying the British Gloster Meteor jet fighter. The jets were purchased from the British for 15,000 tons of crude cotton, as Brazil had no foreign currency reserves to spare. The jet was operated by the FAB until the 1970s, when it was replaced by the F-80C and TF-33A, which were later replaced by the F-5 and Mirage III jets. Cold War During the Cold War, the Brazilian Republic was aligned with the United States and NATO. This meant that the F-5 could be bought cheaply from the United States, who practically sponsored this jet as the "Freedom Fighter". Many other countries, such as Mexico, also benefited from this policy. The former competitors were the General Dynamics F-16, the Dassault-Embraer Mirage 2000-BR, the SAAB-BAE Gripen, and the Sukhoi Su-35. On July 15, 2005 one agreement was set with the French government for the transfer of twelve Dassault Mirage 2000s (ten "C" and two "B" versions) second-hand ex-Armée de L'Air. Known as F-2000s in Brazil, the first two aircraft arrived at Anápolis Air Base on September 4, 2006 Other programs, however, were successfully completed and included the following (as of May 2007): * ALX (Light Attack Aircraft) Program - 99 Super Tucano aircraft. Currently being delivered. * F-5BR Program - Upgrade of Northrop F-5 to F-5BR standard. Include new radar, avionics and weapons systems. Currently being delivered. * CL-X (Medium Transport Aircraft) - Replacement of DHC-5 Buffalo aircraft. 12 CASA C-295 aircraft acquired. Currently being delivered. * P-X (Maritime Patrol) Program- Replacement of EMB-111A aircraft for modernized P-3 airframes with EADS avionics. Currently being implemented. * Interim Mirage 2000C purchase. Currently being delivered. * Acquisition of presidential transport aircraft, known as FAB 001. An Airbus ACJ was bought and delivered in 2005. Pending Programs: * CT-X (Light Transport Aircraft) Program- To replace the C-95 Bandeirante. CASA C-212-400 Aviocar is the likely choice.
BBC news_Half of UK forces 'ready to quit'
BBC news_Half of UK forces 'ready to quit' July 2OO8 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7498904.stm Almost half of UK military personnel are ready to leave the forces, a Ministry of Defence survey suggests. Some 47% of Army and Royal Navy respondents and 44% of those in the RAF said they regularly felt like quitting. Among the concerns raised by the 9,OOO servicemen and women surveyed were the frequency of tours, levels of pay and the quality of equipment and housing. The Ministry of Defence said the survey revealed "areas of concern" but that conditions were being improved. Sense of overstretch The first survey to assess attitudes across the Army, Royal Navy, Royal Marines and the RAF revealed high levels of concern over morale, equipment and pay. The Regular Army is already short of some 5,OOO soldiers, amid worries that experienced young officers and senior NCOs are leaving at an increasing rate. A sense of overstretch was reflected in all three services, with 36% saying they were not happy with the level of separation from family and friends. Asked whether the frequency of tours had an impact on whether to leave or not, 38% of the Army said it had increased their intention to leave, while 59% overall said operation commitments and stretch made them more likely to leave. Overall, 37% believed operational tours came too often, though well over half believed the level was about right. Questioned about morale within their service as a whole, 59% of the Army rated levels as "low" or "very low". In the Royal Navy that was 64%, and the Royal Marines 38%. Within the RAF, 72% said morale across the service was low. Patrick Mercer, Tory MP for Newark and an ex-officer, said the findings reflected the pressures faced by military personnel. "I think the tempo of operations has produced such a level of stress on the families that it is no wonder so many are thinking of leaving," he added. However, 59% of the armed forces overall said they were satisfied or very satisfied with their own job. Some 69% of Army officers were satisfied with the sense of achievement they got from their work, compared with only 51% of soldiers. Only 37% of Royal Marines said that they regularly thought about quitting. The survey frequently showed wide differences between the levels of satisfaction expressed by officers in all services compared with other ranks. For example, 73% of Army officers said they had job satisfaction, compared with 57% of soldiers; 71% of Royal Marine officers compared with only 50% among other ranks, and 7O% of RAF officers compared with 5O percent of other ranks. As many as 64% of Royal Navy officers said they had job satisfaction, but only 48% of other ranks agreed that they were satisfied with their jobs. Asked if they felt valued within their service, 49% of ratings in the Navy said they did not, along with 44% of soldiers and 53% of airmen. 'High priority' More than half of those who responded to the survey were not satisfied with standards of military equipment and resources given to them to do their jobs, while some 4O% were unhappy with service accommodation, and 55% were dissatisfied with the standards of maintenance of their service housing. Yet the survey also showed that despite all the difficulties, especially the lengthy separations from friends and family, pride in serving within the Armed Forces remained high, with 93% of Army officers and 76% of soldiers saying they were proud to be in the Army. Pride in serving the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force was slightly lower, with 84% of navy officers and 62% of sailors proud to be part of the Royal Navy, and 89% of RAF officers and 69% of airmen expressing pride in their Service. Some 24,76O questionnaires were sent out, with almost 9,OOO service personnel (36%) responding between July and October 2OO7. The MoD said a number of measures had recently been introduced, including tax-free operational allowances for those on six-month tours and improved spending on accommodation. Defence Minister Derek Twigg added: "Since the survey was conducted, we have already implemented a number of important changes such as the recent pay rise, an adjustment to the operational bonus, and the introduction of childcare vouchers. "Over the next 1O years, we are also spending £8.4 billion on accommodation, an area that is a high priority for our personnel."
UFO Expert Confirms Footage is Genuine!
Just released Video footage of a mysterious triangle of lights in UK! The video has just been released and was shot at 9.30pm in April 2004. According to experts there's no way this is a reflection from a lamp or Chinese lanterns. This is what is call an amber ball, which is always associated with a triangle. The British ministry of defence is facing calls to launch an official inquiry into a series of recent UFO sightings. These include observations made by the crew of a police helicopter and military personnel. Corporal Mark Proctor witnessed a fleet of objects flying across the sky at about 11pm, on 7 June. 'I went out to see what the commotion was about and could see 13 craft in the skies. They were like rotating cubes with multiple colours.'

Priests and Chaplains
Our Priests and Chaplains Serving Catholics in the military on land, in the air, and at sea. Imagine your job is to provide spiritual and emotional support and guidance to a parish of thousands of mostly young men and women. Imagine most of the people in your parish move away every three years and that new people move in. Imagine that you too, must move and start learning the ropes of a new place. And that you are the only priest in the area. That constant change is part of the every day life and work of Catholic chaplains in the military. Unlike a priest in a civilian parish, chaplains in the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corp and Coast Guard must work with a constantly changing group of people. It is a personal ministry of presence, caring for the needs of Catholic military personnel and their families.
