![]() | Aerobic Metabolism For this lab, we tried to determine how much oxygen is consumed and how much carbon dioxide is produced in aerobic respiration in both germinating and dry peas. We placed 10 pellets of potassium hydroxide in the test tubes of both types of peas to catalyze the respiration process. To measure how much CO2 and O2 was being produced, we placed respirometers on top of the test tubes and put in drops of phenol red to see how much it would move, indicating the consumption and production within the test tube. The germinating peas consumed more oxygen and produced more carbon dioxide while the dry peas barely made any change. The germinating peas had more metabolic activity.
