'Melanesian mythology' refers to the mythology of
Melanesia covering the islands of
New Guinea, the
Admiralty Islands, the
Solomon Islands,
New Caledonia,
Vanuatu and
Norfolk Island. The Melanesians had a complex religious system similar to Western
Polynesia. Much of Melanesian mythology was tied to their local area. Many Melanesians have converted to Christianity as a result of
missionary activity in Melanesia since 1850.
