Colonie, NY 7. Thousand Oaks, CA 8. Newton, MA 9. Toms River, NJ 10. Lake Forest, CA (Taken from Morgan Quitno's Safest and Most Dangerous Cities of 2007) Extra Info - Crime By State (Taken from Wikipedia) Crime rates vary greatly across the states. Overall, New England had by far the lowest crime rates, for both violent and property crimes. New England states also had the lowest homicide rates in the country. Densely populated states such as New York and New Jersey also had crime rates well below the national average. Southern states had the highest overall crime rates. Crime can also be isolated to one particular part of a state. Lafayette, Louisiana, for instance had only 6 murders per 100,000 people in 2004, while New Orleans, Louisiana, had 32.5 murders per 100,000 people. With few exceptions, there also seems to be a strong correlation between median household income and crime rates. In addition to having the country's lowest crime rates, New England states also had the country's highest median household income. Almost all of the nation's wealthiest twenty states, which included northern mid-western and western states such as Wisconsin and California, had crime rates below the national average. The nation's more dangerous states such as Arizona, Arkansas and Texas in turn ranked among those with a household income below the national median. For example, New Hampshire was one of the nation's wealthiest and safest state. New Hampshire's total crime rate was 57.9%; its violent crime rate was 64.1% and its homicide rate 69.1% below the national average. Connecticut, the nation's fourth wealthiest state, had a crime rate 27% and a homicide rate 52.7% below the national average. This contrasts starkly to some of the nation's poorer states such as Georgia, Florida or Louisiana. Louisiana had a crime rate 27% and a homicide rate 130.9% above the national average and ranked as the nation's fourth poorest state with a median household income 20% below the national median. While these trends hold generally true, it should be noted, that several states who fell below the national median for household income such as New York, Maine and Kentucky also had crime rates below the national average, while some wealthier states such as Maryland and Hawaii had crime rates above the national average. The highest total crime rate of any state, except for the District of Columbia, was found in Arizona, followed by South Carolina. The crime rate in Arizona was 46.82% above the national average and three and half (3.5) times as high as that of New Hampshire, America's safest state. The homicide rate was highest in the District of Columbia and Louisiana, as both states are home to some of the most violent areas in the entire country, namely eastern Washington, D.C. and the city of New Orleans. Overall there were six states with fewer than two homicides per 100,000 residents. Yet there were also eight states with more than seven homicides per 100,000 residents. These findings further illustrate the drastic degree to which crimes rates vary from state to state. |

![]() | Hope! HOPE! Beneath the mammoth shadow of The University of Chicago, city blocks are pristine. It is here, a short distance from a world class Titan of American institutions, where the Obama mansion stands boldly at the end of an extravagant avenue in Chicagos South Side. A storied dwelling, built of cheery red brick trimmed with cloud white trellis; the property is buttressed by a long, goose-necked driveway while an elaborate wrought iron fence protects its manicured, emerald grounds. Just beyond this cozy bubble of academias lush neighborhood, a stark reality exists. Exploring the neighborhoods within a 10 minute drive of the Obama family mansion reveals the remnants of the forgotten poor. In some places a vast emptiness exists; barren landscapes, houses deteriorating and broken, windows burned out or boarded-up, pop cans and plastic sacks dancing across streets and catching on barbed wire. In some places, there are people; cautious, huddled, weary, waiting for a bus, searching the want ads. Words cannot describe the tragedy of Mr. Obamas South Side. It has been like this, at times a little worse or at times a little better, for decades. This is who Mr. Obama represented. This is who Mr. Obama organized. This is less than 5 miles from the front yard where Mr. Obamas daughters play. According to the last census reports, the national average of individuals living below the poverty line arrives at 12.4% with a median household income of $41,994.00. In these neighborhoods, individuals living below the poverty line showed an astounding 35.7%, 37.5%, and 46.3%, with median household incomes ranging from $14,205.00 to $ 25,705.00. Time is not Mr. Obamas friend. More and more dirt is being drudged up by the trial of Tony Rezko, the famed Chicago slum lord and Obama family friend. The Chicago Sun Times reported that at the same time Mr. Rezko donated to Mr. Obama, residents in one of Mr. Rezkos buildings were without heat for more than 5 weeks. Eleven of Rezmar Corps foreclosed properties were in Mr. Obamas state legislative district. Had I known that there were buildings that were in deteriorating or poor condition, that certainly would have given me pause. But I didnt know, Obama said. This is the thumb print of Mr. Obama. Time and time again, Mr. Obama has been known to look the other way on controversial issues; from Mr. Rezko to Reverend Wright to schedules from his State Legislative days to more than 100 present votes in the Illinois Senate. Chicagos South Side has been slowly transforming. Over the past decade, the City has been bringing down the housing projects with a wrecking ball. At Robert Taylor Homes, built to house 15,000 of Chicagos poor and at one time crammed to double that amount, residents were given 180 day eviction notices. The major complaint of activists was that the building of new mixed income housing failed to keep up with the wrecking. The poorest of the poor moved into other housing projects nearby. It is impossible to claim ignorance about the dismay of the communities in Mr. Obamas backyard. Where does the buck stop? As president, looking the other way will not cut it, not in these dire times. The job of the President requires an equal amount of judgment, anticipation and action. Mr. Obama has yet to prove he has earned his stripes |

![]() | Dedicated To Polly Hannah Klaas I go to Petaluma Junoir High School and so I dedicated this to someone very special: Polly Hannah Klaas who also attended Petaluma Junoir High. Here is her story: At the age of 12, Polly Klaas resided with her mother, Eve Nichol, and her younger sister, Annie, in Petaluma, California, a low-crime town 40 miles from San Francisco. At the time, Petaluma was an affluent suburb of about 47,000 people. Its median household income was $50,000 per year. Eve Nichol was currently separated from her second husband. The woman lived with her two little girls in a modest, pale-blue home close to downtown Petaluma. The window on one side of the front has a group of simple squares. The other end of the home has a three-sided jut. The middle consists of small stone steps leading up to the front door. Old trees grace the front yard. It was here, on Oct. 1, 1993, that three girls were having a slumber party. Polly's guests were her two best friends, Kate McLean and Gillian Pelham. The three attended Petaluma Junior High together. They had a special bond because not only were they members of the school's band but they all played the same instrument, the clarinet. The three friends took turns posing in a Mickey Mouse hat and an antler cap. Things turned spooky when the trio began goofing around with make-up. Polly painted her face with white powder and black lipstick to make herself look like a ghoul. Then she washed it off. Later, several people were to remember seeing a thickly built, bearded male with bushy gray hair loitering on the sidewalk around Polly Klaas' home. He was not doing anything threatening and could have been a vagrant or perhaps even just a fellow out for a leisurely evening stroll. But he was not. The girls were giggling and playing a board game called Perfect Match when Polly decided it was time to fetch her friends' sleeping bags from the living room. She opened the bedroom door and saw a heavily muscled middle-aged man who was a complete stranger. He was holding a knife and he immediately ordered, "Don't scream or I'll cut your throats!" All three youngsters remained quiet. "Who lives here?" he asked. "I do," Polly replied. Kate and Gillian both suspected a practical joke, a before-Halloween trick of some sort. Polly liked practical jokes. "I'm just doing this for the money," the stranger said. Polly offered him a box with $50 in cash. He refused it and told the three girls to lie down on the floor. Then he tied their hands behind their backs and placed hoods over their heads. "I'm not going to hurt you," he assured them. "I'm just doing this for the money," he repeated. "Please don't hurt my Mom and sister," Polly begged. Kate and Gillian heard the terror in their friend's voice. This was no joke. The stranger picked the 12-year-old Polly up and told her friend to "count to 1,000" before they did anything. Then he carried Polly out of her home. Gillian and Kate did not bother to count. They struggled to free themselves from their bonds and eventually succeeded. At 10:45 p.m., the frantic girls woke Eve Nichol and told her of their recent horror. The mother dialed 911 and the hunt was on. Unfortinatily, Polly's corpse was found with her miniskirt pulled up and her legs spread. Her body had been exposed to the elements for two months and was too decomposed to prove anything definitive about sexual assault. There also was an unused, unrolled condom out of its packet lying nearby. But it is difficult to assess this evidence. Was Davis planning to use it to prevent semen from lodging in her body to eliminate any DNA trail of his rape? It's unlikely that he thought he was at risk of contracting some sexually transmitted disease from a 12-year-old. For more info check out http://www.theblaze1260.com. "Don't expect a lot from this show." Was the unofficial motto of KASR VIDEO, which made a pleasant surprise when we actually knocked out a great show! The program was a weekly 2 hour public access offshoot of the Arizona State University's original alternative radio station that aired in Phoenix. The music video show featured rarely seen videos and "new" music not in the "main stream." Along with non-conventional interviews it became a decent way to nurse a hangover with the midnight party crowd. These clips are edited as a sort of best of; minus the music videos. |

![]() | SWINDON AND IT'S SURROUNDS - WITH AMY WINEHOUSE SWINDON - is a town, in the county of Wiltshire in the South West of England, between Bristol and London . It is in the Borough of Swindon, which has been a unitary authority independent of Wiltshire since 1997. In 2001, the population of The Borough of Swindon was around 184,000. The original Saxon settlement of Swindon sat in a defensible position atop a limestone hill. It is referred to in the Domesday Book as Suindune. Swindon was a small market town, mainly for barter trade, until the mid-1800s. This original market area is on top of the hill in central Swindon, now known as Old Town. The industrial revolution was responsible for an acceleration of Swindon's growth. It started with the construction of the Wilts and Berks Canal in 1810 and the North Wilts canal in 1819. The canals brought trade to the area, and Swindon's population started to grow. In 1840, Isambard Kingdom Brunel chose Swindon as the site for the railway works he planned for the Great Western Railway. Eastwards towards London the line was gently graded, while westwards there was a steep descent towards Bath. Swindon was the junction for the proposed line to Gloucester. The town's railway works were completed in 1842. The GWR built a small railway 'village' to house some of its workers. People still live in the those houses. During the second half of the 19th century Swindon New Town grew around the main line between London and Bristol. The Old Town, the original market town, merged with its newer neighbour at the bottom of the hill to become a single Swindon. In February 2008 The Times named Swindon as one of "The 20 best places to buy a property in Britain", with the average household income in Swindon being among thehighest in the U.K. The town has a total area of approximately 40 km² (25.33 mi²). Swindon has a temperate climate, with roughly equal length winters and summers. The landscape is dominated by the chalk hills of the Wiltshire Downs to the south and east. Swindon is represented in the national parliament by two MPs. The population comprises: 0-15 years old = 20.96%, 16-74 years old = 72.80%. The remaining 6.24% = 75 years old or over. Approximately 300,000 people live within 20 minutes of Swindon town centre. The ethnic make-up of the town is 95.2% white, 1.3% Indian, and 3.5% other. 92.4% were born in the UK, 2.7% in the EU, and 4.9% elsewhere. It is forecast that there will be a 70,000 (38.9%) increase in Swindon's population by 2026; , to 250,000. A 2007 report concluded that the town was the second safest place to live in the U.K. Swindon lies at the junction of two Roman roads. The town has developed over the centuries, with the assistance of the GWR and the canals, into a transport hub. It has two junctions (15 and 16) onto the M4 motorway and is on the ex-GWR main line to London............ AMY WINEHOUSE (no known connection to Swindon), sings "CUPID" (Recorded by Amy in 2007 ?) and "STRONGER THAN ME" (Frank album released October 2003). Amy Jade Winehouse (born 14th September 1983) is an English singer-songwriter, known for her eclectic mix of various musical genres including soul, jazz, rock & roll and R&B. Winehouse is best known for her soulful, powerful contralto vocals. Winehouse's 2003 debut album Frank did well, both commercially and critically, in her native Britain. It was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Her 2006 follow-up album Back to Black led to six Grammy Award nominations and five wins, tying the record for the most wins by a female artist in a single night, and made Winehouse the first British singer to win five Grammys, including three of the "Big Four": Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year. On 14 February 2007, she won a BRIT Award for Best British Female Artist; she had also been nominated for Best British Album. She has won the Ivor Novello Award three times, one in 2004 for Best Contemporary Song (musically and lyrically) for "Stronger Than Me", one in 2007 for Best Contemporary Song for "Rehab", and one in 2008 for Best Song Musically and Lyrically for "Love Is a Losing Game", among other prestigious distinctions. Winehouse has received media attention apart from her singing. Her distinctive style, most notably her signature beehive hairstyle, has spawned imitators[citation needed] and been the muse for fashion designers such as Karl Lagerfeld. The singer's problems with drug and alcohol addiction, as well as self-destructive behaviour, have become regular tabloid news since 2007. She and her husband have been plagued by legal troubles that have led to the cancellation of several tour dates. In June 2008, Winehouse's publicist reported that she had developed early signs of what could lead to emphysema, while her father relayed reports of an irregular heartbeat, stating these conditions were brought on by smoking cigarettes and crack cocaine. |
