MATTAWA, ONTARIO

Adventure Week 2007

'Mattawa' is a town in northeastern Ontario, Canada at the confluence of the Mattawa and Ottawa Rivers in Nipissing District. Mattawa means "Meeting of the Waters" in Ojibwa. Etienne Brulé and Samuel de Champlain were the first Europeans to come to this area, which they did in 1615.
The Town of Mattawa, like many towns in Northern Ontario is one of the most virbrant communities in the north. In the past, Mattawa was an important place, due to its location along the Voyageur's canoe route from Montreal to the Great Lakes. It was a hub for both the fur and lumber trade.
Mattawa is the home of many one of a kind wooden statues, which take you on a journey down Main Street, across the Town and back. It is also home to the Mattawa District Museum which is host to a 16 ft. wooden statue of Big Joe Mufferaw.
Mattawa is also one of the town's mentioned in the song "I've Been Everywhere", famously covered by Hank Snow and Johnny Cash.
Recently, in 2007, Mattawa, Bonfield, Papineau-Cameron, Mattawan, and Calvin Townships have all united to create a newly branded Mattawa Voyageur Country. Our group of townships felt that there was a need for a group to take charge and make some positive changes to the region. One Name, One Message, One Region
