'Manitoba Pioneer Camp' (MPC) is one of several Pioneer Camps across
Canada, owned and operated by
Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship of Canada. It has been running since 1942.
MPC is located on two islands (
MacKinnon Island and
Cash Island) on
Shoal Lake,
Lake of the Woods (just east of the
Manitoba/
Ontario border). Visitors travel down from the Trans-Canada, through the Shoal Lake First Nations reserve, where they are met by one of the many camp-owned boats for a short ride over to camp.
The camp operates for approximately 5 months of the year (May to September). The staff spend the last week of April and the first couple weeks of May opening up camp in preparation for the arrival of school groups doing
outdoor education. The months of July and August are devoted to summer camps for
children aged 8 to 17. Programs include the classic camp experience, as well as specialty programs in
sailing,
fishing, longer
canoe trips, and Leaders-in-Training. September brings a return to outdoor education, including the
Outta Town program hosted by
Canadian Mennonite University.
