'Makushin Volcano' (also known as 'Mount Makushin') is a
stratovolcano on the
Alaska Peninsula in the
U.S. state of
Alaska. Makushin is a
Russian name, probably derived from the
Russian ''makushka'', meaning "the crown (of the head)" or "top," and applied to this feature because it is the highest point on
Unalaska Island. The volcano was called "Ognedyshushchaya Gora" meaning "burning mountain" by Sarichev on a 1792 map.
