History

In November 1996 Michigan voters approved 'Proposal E' which authorized three casinos to be built and operated in the City of Detroit. Las Vegas based 'MGM MIRAGE' and 'Partners Detroit, LLC' a group made up of local Detroit Businessmen were chosen to build the first new casino. The temporary casino officially opened on July 29, 1999 to much fanfare.
In 2005 the MGM Grand Detroit Casino was the subject of a possible sale when parent company MGM MIRAGE announced that it was acquiring rival casino company Mandalay Resort Group. Michigan state gaming laws prohibit a current Michigan casino owner from acquiring or owning more than one casino in the state, Because Mandalay owned the rival MotorCity Casino MGM Mirage had to make a decision to either sell the MGM Grand Detroit or the MotorCity casino and even though MGM MIRAGE had several serious buyers for the MGM Grand Detroit ultimately it was decided to sell the MotorCity Casino to Marian Ilitch[2]
On December 13, 2005 the 'Michigan Gaming Control Board' approved MGM Grand's plans for a permanent casino with 100,000 square feet of casino space, 401 hotel rooms and an eight story self-parking garage to be located on John C. Lodge Freeway and Bagley Street, three to four blocks from the temporary casino. The Casino is also rebuilding 3rd street into a two way boulevard to facilitate traffic movement around the site.
The casino floor will be flanked by three full service restaurants, a nightclub, a buffet restaurant, a "fast food" type restaurant with four different styles of eateries, and several bars. There will also be a coffee shop in both the casino and the hotel lobby. The casino will host a poker room with an adjacent lounge with its own cigar room.
Designers on the project include the joint venture of Hamilton Anderson and Smith Group of Detroit, Cleo Design of Las Vegas, Carol Harris of Detroit, Lawrence Lee of California, Toni Chi of New York, and Super Potato out of Japan.
