A love-bite on the neck.
'Love-bites' or 'hickeys' are a temporary mark or
bruise on one's
skin resulting from
kissing or
sucking or
biting forcefully enough to burst
blood vessels beneath the skin. They could also be called "love-marks","passion marks" or "slag tags". Love-bites or hickeys are generally considered more passionate when biting is involved.
They can sometimes be 'lip' shaped. People who do not bruise easily can find them quite painful due to the amount of pressure applied to get the desired result.
Love bites last, depending on the person, from 4-5 days.
Violinists and
violists can easily receive a similar-looking mark on their neck from the pressure of the chin rest while practising and are often mistaken for having a love bite.
Hickey is the most common slang term used to describe a "love bite", but "hickey" is also slang for a mark left on a male by the stain of a female's lipstick.
