'Los Lagos' (
Spanish "The Lakes") is
Chile's tenth administrative region from north to south. It contains Chile's second largest island,
Chiloé, and the second largest lake,
Lake Llanquihue. Its capital is
Puerto Montt and, besides this city, its most important urban centers are
Valdivia,
Osorno,
Castro,
Ancud,
La Unión,
Puerto Varas and
Río Bueno.
Geography and demography
The region has an area of 67,013 km² and its population, according to the
2002 INE Census was 17.35, with a population density of 15.8 /km². It is bordered on the north by
Araucanía Region, on the south by
Aisén Region, on the west by the
Pacific Ocean and on the east by the
Argentine Republic (provinces of
Neuquén,
Río Negro and
Chubut).
Political and administrative division
The region is divided into five provinces:

Llanquihue
★
Chiloé
★
Palena
★
Valdivia. In
October 2007, this province will be detached to form the new
Los Ríos Region.
