LIST OF CITIES IN THE NETHERLANDS BY PROVINCE
(Redirected from List of cities in the Netherlands)
This is a list of large cities and towns in the Netherlands, sorted by province.
There are no words in the Netherlands which exactly correspond to the English concept of a 'town'. Either one lives in a 'gehucht' (hamlet, settlement, smaller than a village), a 'dorp' (village), or a 'stad' (city). However, since some villages in the Netherlands have grown to a population of more than 150,000, it would be strange to still call those places villages. The general consensus is that a city constitutes a population of more than 50,000 inhabitants.
Cities with between 60,000, and 100,000 inhabitants are mostly called 'middelgrote steden' (medium-sized cities), and the ones with over 100,000 inhabitants are mostly referred to as 'grote steden' (big cities).
On the other hand, some cities in the Netherlands have gained city rights centuries ago, but still have a population way below the 50,000 mark. Those cities can officially call themselves 'stad' (city), although many people will refer to them as 'dorp' (village).
Behind some cities in the list below, you can find information about whether they used to be a 'dorp' (village) that grew into a city, or if it is a city with less than 50,000 inhabitants.
