'Lisboa' is one of the 7 NUTS II regions of Portugal. Prior to 2002 the region was referred as Lisboa e Vale do Tejo. It has two different NUTS III subregions - Grande Lisboa and Península de Setúbal. It covers an area of 2,567 km² (the smallest in mainland Portugal) and has a population of 2,760,723 inhabitants (2005) for a density of 1,075 hab/km².
In practical terms, the region can be considered as representing the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. It is a region of significant importance in industry (light and heavy), services and agriculture.
