'Linthorpe' is a contemporary inner-suburb, and formerly standalone
village and
township in
Middlesbrough, in the
borough of Middlesbrough in the ancient
Cleveland area of the
ceremonial county of
North Yorkshire,
North East England.
The suburb as it is seen now - largely a
Victorian and
Edwardian incarnation - was built up during the town's expansion in that period. It has a wide range of houses from small terraces to large Victorian dwellings.
It is also famous for its
Linthorpe Pottery, which was established in
1879 jointly by John Harrison, a local entrepreneur, and
Christopher Dresser. The pottery firm ran until
1889. The largest collection in the world of the ware can be seen at the local
Dorman Memorial Museum, first opened in
1904.
Linthorpe contains many public houses and is still a popular night out for the people of Middlesbrough. Pubs in Linthorpe include the Park Hotel, The Cleveland, The Red Rose, The Linthorpe, In Off The Park, The Yellow Rose and Union Jaxx.
