LINDESNES

'Lindesnes' is a municipality in the county of Vest-Agder, Norway.
Lindesnes was created as a new municipality January 1, 1964 - after the merger of the older municipalities of Spangereid, Sør-Audnedal and Vigmostad.
It is a coastal municipality, with a long stretch of coastline to the south. It also borders in the north on Audnedal municipality, Lyngdal in the west, and Mandal and Marnardal in the east.
The lighthouse of Lindesnes stands on the southernmost point of the mainland of Norway.

The name

The name

The oldest Norse form of the name was ''Líðandi''. That name is derived from the verb ''líða'' 'go to an end' - and the meaning is probably just 'the end'.
A later form was ''Líðandisnes'', where the word ''nes'' n 'headland' was added.
The English name is the Naze.

Coat-of-arms

The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1986). It shows a light house. (The oldest light house in Norway, from 1655, was built on the headland of Lindesnes.)
