(Redirected from Lieutenant-Governors of Manitoba)
This is a historical list of the 'Lieutenant Governors of Manitoba' in
Canada. The earlier
lieutenant governors also had jurisdiction outside of
Manitoba, in the adjacent territories. From 1870 to 1876 they were titled Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba and the
North-West Territories, and from 1876 to 1905 Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba and
Keewatin District. After
1874 the officer's duties within Manitoba were mainly ceremonial, because the province had
responsible government and a
premier, but was actually the
head of government of the North-West Territories and Keewatin District.

April 9,
1872,
Francis Godschall Johnson was appointed as Lieutenant Governor, replacing Archibald. His commission was revoked before he was sworn in, however, and Archibald was retained in the position for a few months longer. Johnson was usually included in nineteenth-century lists of Manitoba's Lieutenant Governors, but was dropped from the ranks in the early twentieth-century.
