'Lee Byung-chul' (
February 12,
1910 –
November 19,
1987) was the founder of the
Samsung Group. He was the son of a wealthy landowning family who used his inheritance to open a
rice mill for his first venture. That endeavor was not especially successful so he established a trucking business in
Taegu on
March 1st,
1938, which he named Cheil, the forerunner to Samsung. He attended college at
Waseda University in
Tokyo, although he did not complete his degree.
Current satellite groups separated from Samsung include
CheilJedang Group or CJ Group, the
Hansol Group, the bankrupt
Saehan Media Group, and the
Shinsegae Group.
