LEE BYUNG-CHUL

'Lee Byung-chul' (February 12, 1910November 19, 1987) was the founder of the Samsung Group. He was the son of a wealthy landowning family who used his inheritance to open a rice mill for his first venture. That endeavor was not especially successful so he established a trucking business in Taegu on March 1st, 1938, which he named Cheil, the forerunner to Samsung. He attended college at Waseda University in Tokyo, although he did not complete his degree.
Current satellite groups separated from Samsung include CheilJedang Group or CJ Group, the Hansol Group, the bankrupt Saehan Media Group, and the Shinsegae Group.
