2000, the population is 15,452. Its
county seat is
Lawrenceville.

mi²). 963 km² (372 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it (0.52%) is water.

History
Lawrence County was formed in
1821 out of
Crawford and
Edwards Counties. It was named for Captain
James Lawrence, killed in action in
1813 while in command of the
frigate USS Chesapeake. Motally wounded, he uttered the famous phrase "Don't give up the ship".

population density was 16/km² (42/mi²). There were 7,014 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (19/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 97.97%

There were 6,309 households out of which 28.70% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.90% were
married couples living together, 9.00% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.60% were non-families. 29.20% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.00% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.89.
In the county the population was spread out with 22.70% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 26.20% from 25 to 44, 23.40% from 45 to 64, and 20.10% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 91.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.80 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $30,361, and the median income for a family was $37,050. Males had a median income of $28,428 versus $18,727 for females. The
per capita income for the county was $17,070. About 10.70% of families and 13.70% of the population were below the
poverty line, including 21.30% of those under age 18 and 8.50% of those age 65 or over.
