'Laupāhoehoe' is a
census-designated place (CDP) in
Hawaii County,
Hawaii,
United States. The population was 473 at the 2000 census.
History
On April 1st,
1946 the
Big Island of Hawaii was struck by a
tsunami, killing hundreds of people, primarily in Laupāhoehoe and
Hilo. A monument to the dead now stands on Laupāhoehoe Point.

Laupāhoehoe is located at (19.983296, -155.235889).
According to the
United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 5.9
km² (2.3
mi²). 5.4 km² (2.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (8.41%) is water.
Demographics
As of the
census of 2000, there were 473 people, 178 households, and 142 families residing in the CDP. The
population density was 87.8/km² (227.9/mi²). There were 196 housing units at an average density of 36.4/km² (94.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 30.23%

Native American, 28.33%
Asian, 6.13%
Pacific Islander, 0.63% from
other races, and 33.62% from two or more races.
Hispanic or
Latino of any race were 10.15% of the population.
There were 178 households out of which 24.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.6% were
married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.2% were non-families. 18.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 21.8% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 24.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 104.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $29,250, and the median income for a family was $30,000. Males had a median income of $21,667 versus $21,607 for females. The
per capita income for the CDP was $11,896. About 28.4% of families and 25.2% of the population were below the
poverty line, including 41.1% of those under age 18 and 14.0% of those age 65 or over.
