 | Gordon Parks & David Finn - Air date: 06-09-03 Gordon Roger Alexander Buchannan Parks (November 30, 1912 -- March 7, 2006) was a groundbreaking African-American photographer, musician, poet, novelist, journalist, activist and film director. He is best remembered for his photo essays for Life magazine and as the director of the 1971 film Shaft. .......Parks is remembered for his activism, filmmaking, photography, and writings. He was the first African American to work at Life magazine, and the first to write, direct, and score a Hollywood film. Parks was a co-founder of Essence magazine and one of the early contributors to the blaxploitation genre. In 1984 Parks received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Thiel College, a private, liberal arts college in Greenville, Pennsylvania. In 1989, the United States Library of Congress deemed The Learning Tree "culturally significant" due to its being the first major studio feature film directed by an African-American. Thus, the film was preserved in the United States National Film Registry. In 1995, Parks announced that he will donate his papers and entire artistic collection to the Library of Congress. One year later, "The Gordon Parks Collection" was currated. In 1997, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. mounted a career retrospective on Parks, Half Past Autumn: The Art of Gordon Parks.  | Tornado World Record at Mercedes-Benz Museum Stuttgart The Mercedes-Benz Museum is now officially home to the "strongest artificially generated tornado in the world". The attempted record was confirmed in the presence of Guinness Book of Records representative Olaf Kuchenbecker. The 34.4-metre-high artificial tornado serves to eliminate smoke from the museum in the event of a fire. "We are delighted that the Mercedes-Benz Museum is now also featured in the Guinness Book of Records," said Michael Bock, manager of Mercedes-Benz Museum GmbH. "By successfully achieving the world record as 'strongest artificially generated tornado in the world', the Mercedes-Benz Museum has once again underlined its outstanding position in the world of museums also in terms of architecture." The architecture of the Mercedes-Benz Museum placed particular demands on construction planners, architects and engineers with regard to smoke elimination. The provisions of the approving authority and fire protection regulations require all areas outside the fire level to be smoke-free in the event of smoke emission. However, due to the open-plan structure of the Mercedes-Benz Museum, the various exhibition areas are connected to each other without any fire zones via an interior courtyard and ramps. From the perspective of smoke elimination this presented a challenging task that could not be implemented through conventional fluid mechanics. It was necessary to take a new approach, and so a globally unique smoke elimination system was developed especially for the Mercedes-Benz Museum. In the event of fire, 144 outlets located along the core walls inject air into the interior courtyard of the Mercedes-Benz Museum. This generates an artificial tornado, and the smoke collected is then discharged into the outside air via a smoke elimination ventilator located in the upper part of the building. This procedure uses the principle of the tornado force, which has a devastating effect under natural conditions, to create a controlled life-saving form of fluid mechanics that opens up new architectural possibilities. The Mercedes-Benz Museum with its unique smoke elimination system was selected from among some 800 applications that are submitted each week to the Guinness Book of Records. With 110 million copies in circulation, the Guinness Book of Records has been one of the world's most successful reference works since the 1950s, and is now distributed in 20 languages and 100 countries.  | Christmas Stories and negrastrákarnir - SSShow #12 Seth and Simon try to read the story of Grýla, the Icelandic Christmas hag, to two little friends named: Max and Minerva, but the precocious little ones keep interrupting, and Simon ends up losing his cool. Seth makes his own missionary journey to the largest bookstore on the main shopping street in downtown Reykjavik called: Mál og menning. While at the bookstore, Seth sees a huge display for the book, negrastrákarnir (or 10 negro boys), with illustrations by Guðmundur Thorsteinsson. The book was originally sold as a kids´ book, many years ago, in Iceland, and was re-printed this year (2007). Simon wanted to make a musical moment out of this journey to the bookstore, so Simon, Edda, Georg and Seth contributed their musical talents. This book has been the subject of many newspaper articles and blogs in Iceland and has been the subject of comedy sketches on a couple Icelandic television shows. Some folks have said it's a beloved book from their childhood - a typical Icelandic book. Some folks have said it's should have never been re-published - is it a typical Icelandic book? His PhD thesis showed how the science of control and communication in the animal and the machine could be extended to organisations to create a science of governance as presented in his articles. His thesis built upon his education as an electrical engineer in Tasmania, BSc from the University of Melbourne and an MBA from Harvard. From 1966 to 1974 he was a founding partner in a private group that gained control of over a dozen publicly traded corporations in Australia. This gave him experience as a controlling shareholder, company director, chairman of one company, and CEO of two others. As a serial entrepreneur founding new enterprises, some of which became publicly traded, he gained further experience as a Chairman and CEO. He also became joint CEO/owner of a mutual fund management company. In 1975 he founded the first educational course in the world to provide an educational qualification for company directors and published his first book on Democratising the Wealth of Nations.  | Chinese Comic Book Artist Persecuted ANCHOR: We have a story of one Chinese comic book artist's ordeal of persecution to tell you about. Well-known comic book artist Jingxiong Guo is facing pressure to leave Beijing before the Olympics begin Friday. That's because he published a series of comics depicting the Epoch Times "Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party." He tells NTD that if he doesn't leave Beijing by Friday, he faces arrest from the Chinese communist regime. Here's more on his story. STORY: Jingxiong Guo is one of the most well-known comic book artists in China. He's the creator of the Flag Comics Creation Union, which prints the most comic books in the mainland. He's also the first Chinese to get a foothold in the American comic book market. Back in July of last year, Jingxiong was invited to attend the world's largest comic book convention in San Diego in the U.S. After he returned to Changchun last November he was arrested by the city's national security bureau without any formal charge. They allegedly tortured Jingxiong, demanding the names of people he met in the U.S. He was forced to stand up straight or squat for a very long time, and was also sleep deprived. But he managed to make it out. [Jingxiong Guo, Comic Book Author]: "The deal of releasing me was to not telling anyone that I have had contact with them, as a main guarantee. In those meetings I felt that the word 'Olympics' is very sensitive for them and also very important. It also has a big effect on how they will handle me." The security bureau told Jingxiong that if it wasn't for the reputation of the Olympics, they would have already given him a severe sentence. [Jingxiong Guo, Comic Book Author]: "They also confiscated my passport. I think it's because they will get me after the Olympics. At that time, the French Ministry of Culture, my book publisher and my family were all trying to find me. They (the CCP) were afraid that the overseas media and overseas Chinese media will know about this. If this is exposed, they think that it will hinder the Olympics to be held successfully. " This is not the first time Guo got arrested. When the Chinese regime started to persecute Falun Gong in 1999 he was thrown behind bars after he went to petition the crackdown. He says the practice has benefited his body and soul. [Jingxiong Guo, Comic Book Author]: "This is a such good practice, and many people might not know. Especially many young people around me and their parents, they all don't understand. At that time the slander of Falun Gong was everywhere in China. I had to face all kinds of pressure everyday, especially when people know that you are practicing Falun Gong."
