![]() | Aran Islands, Ireland The rugged and sparsely populated Aran Islands off the Atlantic Coast of Ireland. There's a several hundred foot drop down to the sea on the west of the islands, and the ocean stretches 3,000 miles from there to the next landfall - America. The Irish language is still spoken there as the main language unlike the rest of the country where English is the language spoken by the majority of people, although most can speak some Irish. The island in the pics is Inis Mór, the largest of the three, the other two being Inis Meáin, and Inis Oirr Music - May It Be - Howard Shore/Lord of the Rings Soundtrack. Performed by Enya. |

![]() | Hurricane Ivan - Pensacola, Florida - September 16, 2004 Hurricane Ivan was a classic, long-lived Cape Verde hurricane that reached Category 5 strength three times during its lifespan. Ivan caused tremendous damage as it crossed Grenada, the Cayman Islands and made landfall near the Alabama/Florida border. Maximum sustained winds at landfall in the U.S. are estimated at 120mph with gusts to 140mph, Category Three intensity. At landfall, the storm's minimum central pressure was 946mb (27.94in). This video also includes some behind-the-scenes footage from the National Hurricane Center including clips of my good friends and hurricane forecasters, Lixion Avila, Jack Beven, Max Mayfield (the center's director at that time)... as well as another good friend, Monroe County ex-Civil Defense Director Billy Wagner. Also in the background is Florida Governor, Charlie Crist. |
![]() | Tropical Storm Fay in Titusville, Florida - Third Landfall I intercepted the southern "eyewall" of tropical storm Fay in and around Titusville. I was planning on driving to the Georgia/Florida border (wish I had now) but instead tired and decided to head to the coast near Kennedy Space Center. The winds were a very steady 30mph, with a few gusts into the 40-50mph range. The most interesting thing I noticed was the bay storm surge, which looked to be at least 3 feet high both on the leeward and windward side of the islands. Damage was light but consisted of downed trees and tree branches, knocked over signs and a few damaged power lines. |
![]() | Hurricane Dolly Makes Landfall Hurricane Dolly made landfall in South Padre Island, TX earlier this afternoon as a Cat. 2 hurricane. As it is over land now, it will continue to weaken as far as winds are concerned, but heavy, flooding rains will continue to be the main problem as the system heads inland. Featuring OCM Vivian Brown. |
![]() | 5 Across the Great Divide - Landfall Jeffrey Barbee is sailing Across The Great Divide with Deon Tulleken, exposing the most striking hot-spots of biodiversity in the Atlantic Ocean before they disappear. This expedition takes us from southern Africa's Cape of Good Hope to the islands of St. Helena, Ascension, Fernando Des Naronha and the Azores all the way up to Amsterdam in Holland. On this very special trip, we are meeting with scientists working with breeding whale populations, covering airport construction on St. Helena, working with climate change mapping systems through the UK Metereological office, and many more exciting and controversial projects. |

![]() | Hurricane Georges - Luquillo, Puerto Rico - Sep. 21, 1998 Hurricane Georges crossed the entire length of Puerto Rico on September 21, 1998. As the storm made landfall over the southeastern part of the island, I was able to intercept the northern eyewall in the town of Luquillo (the same location where I intercepted Hurricane Hugo nine years earlier). Although Georges had weakened significantly as it approached the Northeast Caribbean, the hurricane began to strengthen rapidly just before landfall in Puerto Rico. Georges was a Category Three with maximum sustained winds of 115mph and gusts between 130-140mph at landfall in Puerto Rico. Winds of 110mph with a peak gust of 130mph was recorded in Fajardo, very close to my location. The minimum central pressure at landfall in Puerto Rico was 968mb (28.59in). |
