'The Llanquihue Lake' is located 23 kilometers from Puerto Montt.
Llanquihue has an area of about 330 square miles (860 square km) and is 22 miles (35 km) long and 25 miles
(40 km) wide with depths of 5,000 feet (1,500 m).
Its western shores are bordered by farmlands; to the east rise forested Andean foothills.
In the distance rise the snowcapped volcanoes Osorno (2652 mts) and Calbuco (2015 mts).
During the second half of the 19th century, the Chilean government,
anxious to consolidate the unknown lands in the south,
granted land rights to European homesteaders.
In 1852 a boatload of German immigrants arrived on the shores of modern-day Puerto Montt and
claimed their territory on the shores of Lago Llanquihue – the second largest lake in Chile.
Near its banks there are attractive cities, towns and beaches such as the following:
- 'Puerto Varas.'
- 'Ensenada.'
- 'Puerto Klocker.'
- 'Cascada.'
- 'Puerto Octay.'
- 'Frutillar.'
- 'Llanquihue.'
It has numerous beaches, suitable for water sports; some have picnic and/or camping facilities,
and others have complete tourist services.
These beaches are surrounded by agricultural land that gets to the lake by means of soft plateaus,
forming small inlets and long beaches.
In the lower areas of the Osorno Volcano that gets to the lake coast there are steep areas with native vegetation.
The coast perimeter of the lake has paved and rocky roads, mainly in good condition
except from the area of the lower areas of the Osorno volcano).
Its innumerable beaches are all suitable for water sports, some with picnic and/or camping facilities,
others with complete tourist services.
The lake, the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes can be seen from all the cities and in some places
the Puntiagudo volcano can also be seen.
There are ski tracks in the lower areas of the Osorno volcano(on the Ensenada side and near Puerto Klocker)
with some shelters and enough equipment.
Salmon species fishing is carried out intensively during the allowed season,
especially in the middle of the lake and in the mouth of the Pescado, Blanco and Tepú rivers.
The waters of the Llanquihue Lake are greenish blue with a temperature that ranges from 10º in winter
and 18º in summer.
The rivers that take their water to the lake are innumerable streams that are born in the
Calbuco and Osorno volcanoes, and in the Andean area; Pescado, Blanco and Tepú rivers.
