'Lac Courte Oreilles' () is a
lake in
Sawyer County, Wisconsin, near the town of
Hayward. The lake has an abundance of
northern pike,
muskie,
walleye,
bass and other
fish, and is a popular fishing destination. The name is shared by a nearby
Ojibwa reservation (see
Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians); in the
Ojibwe language it is called ''Odaawaa-zaaga'iganiing'', "Ottawa Lake".
[1]
The name was given by French fur trappers who were the earliest European explorers in the area; the French translates as "Lake Short Ears," as the trappers believed the
Anishinaabe peoples living in the area cut off the edges of their ears.
