 | Antibes - Restaurant "La Gravette" This is the restaurant in Antibes where I used to work as a GARÇON (waiter) in 1984. It was very emotional to return there and find that the owner, Alain Barale and Fareed the loyal Head Waiter (still there!) still remembered me! At the time, the Tahitian "Aloha shirts" I wore were my trademark. You cannot imagine how many customers I attracted by wearing these shirts! Many of the tourists here had travelled to Tahiti and recognized the shirts (which have a different look than the Hawaiian shirts) and were interested in talking with someone from Tahiti again and share their souvenirs. I also had the distinction of being the only waiter in the entire "Restaurant Row" who spoke any English. Very soon, all the American and British yacht owners in the port (and there were quite a few of them...) became regulars. And these people were loaded with money! There were some really great tips!!! The water fountain that you see on the left was moved sometime after I left Antibes. It actually stood (and was operational) at the spot from where I am shooting this video, accross from the restaurant. I would sit there during my breaks and feed bread crums to the pigeons. The fountain was relocated probably to make more room for passers-by. Unfortunately, it was also dried. Now, it just serves as decoration. Pity! By the way, if you ever visit Antibes, please make it a point to eat there at least once. I am not saying that just to hustle up customers all the way from Japan. The food there is REALLY good! It has always been. La Gravette has been featured in many magazines for the quality of its food, its service and the decent prices. Perhaps, if you mention to the owner, Mr. Alain Barale, that "Andre' Colomas du Japon" recommended the restaurant, he might just throw-in a free digestif...If he does, please have it "A ma santé" (to my health). |
