![]() | A quick bus ride to and from Steinstücken (Berlin) ca. 1988 (NB: I put the same video at better quality at http://tinyurl.com/2w8p5c ). Steinstücken was a tiny portion (about 200 inhabitants) of West Berlin that was disconnected from it. In 1972 a land swap with East Germany was arranged to provide direct access to the exclave from the main body of West Berlin. The resulting road was about 1 km long and, naturally, was lined with the Wall on both sides. The video shows first a quick glimpse of an unused S-Bahn track cut off by the Wall on the West Berlin side (in Kohlhasenbrück/Zehlendorf) then the short bus ride into the exclave along Bernhard-Beyer-Straße (the access road). After looking around the end of the street for a few minutes, we take the bus back into Zehlendorf in "mainland" West Berlin. |
