'Koganei' (小金井市; -shi) is a
city located in
Tokyo,
Japan. As of
2003, the city has an estimated
population of 113,786 and the
density of 10,042.89 persons per
km². The total area is 11.33 km².
History
The city was founded on
October 1,
1958.
Geography
Geographically, the city lies approximately the center of Tokyo.It is flanked on the north and the south by two large parks. To the north is Koganei Park, which includes the
Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum (江戸東京建物園, Edo Tōkyō Tatemono En), a branch of the
Edo-Tokyo Museum located in Ryogoku, Tokyo. To the south is Nogawa Park and Tama Cemetery, two of the largest green areas in Tokyo.
Koganei City is transected by the
JR Chuo Line, and is served by the
Higashi-Koganei and
Musashi-Koganei stations. Additionally,
Shin-Koganei Station on the
Seibu Tamagawa Line serves the eastern portion of the city.
The famous
Studio Ghibli has its studio near the Higashi-koganei station, and
Gainax studio also stands nearby.
Hosei University,
Tokyo Denki University,
Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology and
Tokyo Gakugei University are located in Koganei city.
International Christian University, located in
Mitaka City, lies partially within Koganei City.
