The 'Kazakh ASSR' was an autonomous republic of the
Soviet Union. It became the
Kazakh SSR on December 5, 1936.
Oddly enough, its original name was actually the ''Kirgiz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic'' (not to be confused with Soviet Kirghizia, a Central Asian territory which is now the independent state of
Kyrgyzstan). This A.S.S.R. was established on 26 Aug 1920, and was a part of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (R.F.S.F.R.)
In 1925 it was renamed the Kazakh Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. In 1929 the city of
Almaty (Alma-Ata) was designated as the capital of the ASSR.
